To: Cupertino Union School District (CUSD) Board Members/Superintendent/Appropriate Personnel,
We, the undersigned parents and guardians of students in the Cupertino Union School District (CUSD) and concerned community members, hereby petition the CUSD Board to take immediate action to establish policies ensuring instructional materials align with established grade-level curriculum objectives and standards, making them age-appropriate, as required by law. We urge the district to establish a process to minimize potential harm inflicted on children due to out-of-curriculum materials.
The primary identity of educators is “Teacher,” and their responsibility is to put students’ needs first, creating a supportive and stable environment. As parents, we are committed to ensuring that our children are not subjected to radical social experiments and that public school classrooms do not become extensions of personal political activism. While we value diversity and inclusion for all cultural, ethnic, racial, linguistic, and gender backgrounds, we firmly believe that public school instruction must uphold the highest standards of educational integrity and prioritize our children’s well-being.We hereby petition the CUSD Board to take immediate action on the following matters:
- Adopt BP 6144, Instruction on Controversial Issues – We urge the adoption of BP 6144, which states that instruction on controversial issues “shall be relevant to the adopted course of study” and “the topic shall be suitable to the age and maturity of the students.” This policy is already in place in several school districts, including the Fremont Union High School District.
- Ensure Compliance with Federal Case Law – We request that the district ensure compliance with federal case law, which consistently supports that teacher speech – through decorations, posters, media, or materials – must align with the curriculum objectives for each grade level. Classroom materials must not serve as a platform for personal activism or political agendas.
- Establish an Appeal Process – We call for the establishment of an appeal process for parents to submit objections to any controversial materials that do not align with grade-level curriculum objectives. Any noncompliant instruction must be suspended until the appeal is resolved through a transparent committee process, minimizing potential harm to young children.
- Implement Opt-Out Procedures – We request the implementation of procedures allowing parents to withdraw their children from any materials that do not align with grade-level curriculum objectives. This opt-out should ensure age-appropriateness when teachers fail to comply with the adopted curriculum and the issue remains unresolved through the appeal process.
We believe these actions are essential to safeguard the educational integrity and well-being of our children. It is crucial to take immediate steps to prevent any potentially harmful behaviors in the classroom and to ensure that all instruction adheres to the principle of “do no harm.” Thank you for your attention to these important matters.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
